ROTA Activities

February 14 Thursday 10.30 am

 Diana: A Celebration

Join us to view the exhibition Diana: A Celebration in Australia for the first time and exclusive to the Powerhouse Museum -a superb exhibition from Althorp Estate, home of the Spencer family, celebrating the life and work of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Diana: A Celebration traces the life story of Diana, from her birth to her untimely death, and features more than 150 of her personal items. Highlights include Diana’s royal wedding gown, jewellery and outfits by major international designers. Also on display are childhood letters, home movies and family memorabilia.

We have to book a ticket for this exhibition, so we’ll go all the way and book for the exhibition and high tea in the Tea Room, at $24 each. I need a group of ten to make this reduced price work.

We have to book for this event, so RSVP to Ann on the enclosed booking form by January 22.

March 19 Wednesday

Cronulla Eco-Cruise

A Local visits the Eco Tour I went on the cruise this year and took this photo of the kooka with the skipper which is now on their website! It was a great afternoon!

As seen on Channel 7's Sydney Weekender TV show.

The Port Hacking Explorer II boat is purpose built for shallow waterways allowing access to places along the Port Hacking and the Audley Weir at low tide. On the 12:30 cruise, you can order lunch from the onboard menu. All orders are made fresh and picked up along the way. Drinks are available onboard.

Staff provide a full commentary onboard including the history of the port and the flora & fauna found in the area whilst you enjoy bottomless cups of tea and coffee with biscuits. Your Skipper/tour guide will skim by secluded beaches and sandbars giving you the perfect opportunity to photograph Pelicans, Spoonbills, Migratory Waders and other birds in their natural habitat. Cruise to the end of the Hacking River to Audley and stay on board for a round trip to see some of Sydney’s most magnificent waterfront properties as we cruise back to Cronulla.

Train 10.22am Central to Cronulla by 11.16am

Train Cronulla  4.36pm to Central by 5.33pm

We need to BOOK to go on this cruise, so you will have to RSVP to Ann in 2008 and I will try to organize some car transport to Cronulla.

 April 9 Wednesday 12-1 pm

Visit to Vaucluse House    $4.00

Vaucluse House survives as one of Sydney's only 19th century harbourside estates with house, kitchen wing, stables and outbuildings and is still surrounded by ten hectares of formal gardens and grounds.

Built in 1803, Vaucluse House was once owned by William Charles Wentworth, 'father' of the first Constitution for New South Wales, his wife Sarah and their immediate family of 10 children who lived in the house from 1827–1853 and again in 1861–1862.

This gothic style mansion includes both lavish entertaining rooms and functional 'downstairs' areas. Vaucluse House paints a picture of the social aspirations and lifestyles of the Wentworths and of the servants, both convict and free, who lived and worked there. The interiors include original Wentworth pieces together with furniture, furnishings and collections of the early to mid 19th century.

If you have difficulties walking then you can be dropped at the entrance of the house, on the carriage loop, by entering via Olola Avenue. Vaucluse House tearooms are the perfect place for a decadent Devonshire Tea –that’s where we’ll be!

We have to book for this event, so RSVP to Ann in 2008.

 May 12 Monday 1.30-2.30 pm

$5.00 each (guided group cost)

Tour of the Justice & Police Museum

Join us for a guided tour of the Justice & Police Museum, which was originally the Water Police Court (1856), Water Police Station (1858) and Police Court (1886). Restored to their 1890s character, the building's heavy blocks of sandstone, spiked gates, winding steps and corridor of cells reinforce the Museum's themes of crime and punishment and law and order.

The Justice & Police Museum features a magistrates court, a recreated police charge room and remand cells, a gallery of mug shots of Sydney's early criminals and an array of spine chilling weapons.

It also showcases weird and wonderful relics from notorious crimes such as the Pyjama Girl Case and the Graeme Thorne Kidnapping, as well as many original objects associated with such legendary bushrangers as Frank Gardiner, Ben Hall and Captain Moonlight.

Make sure that you get a plan of the museum when you arrive, as the building is full of nooks and crannies housing fascinating displays and exhibits.

We have to book for this event, so RSVP to Ann in 2008.

Tour of Government House

Government House was constructed between 1837and 1845. It is the most sophisticated example of a Gothic Revival building in New South Wales.

The ground floor State Rooms include the dining room, drawing room and ballroom. These contain an outstanding collection of 19th and 20th century furnishings and decoration that reflect changing styles and the differing tastes of the Governors and their wives. The first floor includes State Apartments that were used by the Governor, visiting members of the Royal Family and other Heads of State.

The house is sited in an important historic garden overlooking Sydney Harbour. Viewing of the house is by guided tour only.
